SUPPORTING YOUR CHILD
DURING THEIR JOB SEARCH
Looking for a Job
We know it is very hard for Travellers to get good steady jobs due to discrimination, racism and lack of education. As parents, it can be really hard to see your child frustrated and upset while looking for work.
It is important to try to stay positive and give as much encouragement as possible. There are also a number of supports out there for your child while they are looking for work.
Some ways you can support your child are:
1. ENCOURAGE THEM TO STAY IN EDUCATION AS LONG AS POSSIBLE
There are supports out there for Travellers who want to continue education. Link in with your local Traveller organisation/Primary Health Care Project for more information.
- If your child is thinking about leaving school early, encourage them to stay as long as possible. Finishing their Leaving Cert and going to college will give them more opportunities for jobs.
- If they have left school early, it is never too late to go back and do courses in something they are interested in.
- Remind your child of positive role models within our community who have continued with their education
2. ASK THEM WHAT THEY WOULD LIKE TO DO
Try to help them to think about what kind of job they would like and what fits with their skills and interests.
Try to help them with their CVs or job applications where you can - even just talking it through and reminding them of their experience.
Contact your local Traveller organisation to link them in with other organisations that support people looking for jobs.
3. STAY POSITIVE AND ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILD
Encourage your child to do things to keep their self-esteem up and to stay busy such as exercise and volunteering with local organisations or groups.
Encourage them to keep focused even though they may feel frustrated - for example if they are just being taken on for a week here and there in construction work. Encourage them to upskill to try and get a permanent job.
We know some young people may be worried if they are trying to support a family and have a steady income and be a good role model. If your child is having financial problems let them know they can contact Traveller MABS for advice on how to manage the bills as well as go to organisations like Intreo.
