COPING WITH
GRIEF & LOSS
Coping with grief and death is very common in the Traveller Community. This is because Traveller death rates are higher than the general population and Travellers are a close knit community.
Dealing with grief and loss of a loved one is very hard. It is normal to have a lot of different feelings when grieving and for grief to affect you in different ways.
Here are some ways you might feel physically:
- getting headaches
- feeling tired
- finding it hard to concentrate on schoolwork or chats
- feeling like you want to be on your own more
If someone you know has recently passed away it is important that you show your feelings or emotions and that you feel you can talk about that person.
Try to talk to family and friends about the memories you have of them. You can talk about the good times you remember, as well as if you are feeling sad or down at the moment.
Sometimes, because there are loads of people living on Traveller sites, you may only have a little bit of private time to grieve. It is important you make sure you do take some time for yourself.
Give yourself time. Grief is something that can be with us for a very long time.
Be patient with yourself and others.
- Talk about your feelings
- Be kind to yourself – eat and rest
- Ask questions about what you do not understand
- Keep stress or pressure at a low level
- Keep a diary about how you are feeling
- Try to eat and sleep as normally as you can
- Exercise or go for walks
- Avoid drugs and alcohol
If you feel you need support, remember there are supports available such as your local parish priest.
You can always link in with
your local Traveller organisation
or Traveller Primary Health
Care Project.
